Dr. Raed M. Alnajjar of Henry Ford Health has joined Drs. Stanley Chetcuti, P. Michael Grossman, and Himanshu Patel as a MISHC Co-Program Director. “He brings a wealth of experience in cardiac surgery, with a focus on surgical and percutaneous management of mitral valve disease,” said Dr. Grossman.

As MISHC has grown to include both mitral valve procedures and TAVR procedures, it is an ideal time to expand leadership, particularly from a surgical perspective.

“MISHC’s mission of improving quality, safety, and patient outcomes motivates me,” said Dr. Alnajjar. “I look forward to being available to our structural heart sites as a resource.”

It is important to Dr. Alnajjar to continue fostering the collaboration between cardiologists and CT surgeons, working to recruit more cardiac surgeons to the field of structural heart care. He is eager to develop best practice guidelines for structural heart procedures and share MISHC’s work and experience at the national level.

Dr. Alnajjar is particularly interested in robotic and minimally invasive transcatheter approaches to treat structural heart disease serving as a proctor for robotic-cardiothoracic surgical procedures and alternative access TAVRs at the national level. He is also interested in multiple arterial grafting, cardiac innovations, training, and education. He is a clinical assistant professor at Michigan State University and a member of the core faculty staff for the Henry Ford Macomb General Surgery Residency Program.

A graduate of the University of Jordan Medical school, Dr. Alnajjar completed his Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship training at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Heart Institute in 2013. He joined Henry Ford Health in 2016 as a member of the senior staff in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department, becoming Henry Ford Macomb Hospital’s Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department in 2019.

He is certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, the American Board of Surgery, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and the Jordanian Board of Surgery and serves as a board member and chair of the education committee at the Michigan Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (MSTCVS). He is also co-chair of the Media Committee at the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.

“Dr. Alnajjar brings a unique perspective as a busy surgeon in the Henry Ford System,” said Dr. Grossman. “This will benefit MISHC and our mission to serve and support quality improvement in all hospitals across Michigan.”
