Paper on Cardiac Rehab Published by Our Partners at MVC
Our partners at the Michigan Value Collaborative (MVC) have a new paper, “Variation in Cardiac Rehabilitation Participation During Aortic Valve Replacement Episodes of Care,” published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions. While cardiac rehab (CR) has been found to be beneficial, CR utilization remains low. This study looked at determinants of CR variability during AVR episodes of care: transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR).
A cohort of 10,124 AVR episodes of care was identified from the Michigan Value Collaborative statewide multipayer registry. 39.8% of those patients enrolled in CR. The team found that while CR participation during AVR episodes of care varies substantially across hospitals, within-hospital CR participation rates were significantly correlated across treatment strategies. Therefore, a way to help assist future quality improvement efforts to increase the use of CR after AVR could be to identify hospital practices associated with higher CR participation.
