Farewell, Patty Theurer
Patty Theurer, MSN, RN, served as the program manager of MSTCVS since its inception in 2005. She fostered collaboration among hospitals to share best practices and helped establish processes to standardize and improve care. Patty also supported the State of Michigan’s implementation of the Phase of Care Mortality Analysis (POCMA) – a method to evaluate surgical mortality.
“Patty has organized decades of educational sessions and collaborative meetings, providing MISHC-participating teams with valuable resources to enhance patient care and improve outcomes,” said Dr. P. Michael Grossman. Dr. Grossman – along with Drs. Raed Alnajjar, Stanley Chetcuti, and Himanshu Patel – is a co-program director of MISHC.
In addition to her work with MSTCVS and MISHC, Patty has served on the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Adult Cardiac Surgery Core Group, the STS Advances in Quality Outcomes (AQO) Abstract review committee, and the AQO planning committee. She assisted in starting the heart surgery program at Providence Hospital and participated in all phases of patient care including preoperative evaluation, preparation and documentation, intraoperative surgical assistant support including saphenous vein harvest and postoperative rounding, daily notes, discharge teaching, and discharge documentation preparation.
"In the operating room, I served in various roles, including circulator, scrub nurse, first assistant, and team leader,” Patty said. “My interest in the MSTCVS Quality Collaborative grew from the early integration of the STS database into the cardiac surgery program at Providence. The launch of the MSTCVS QC pilot in late 2005 brought an exciting challenge and paved the way for a new career path."
Patty’s leadership and dedication have left a lasting impact on MISHC, and the quality of care delivered to patients statewide.
